Archetyp fotografie, Pohľad z pracovne Nicéphorea Niépcea z roku 1827, prešiel viacerými premenami. Najvýznamnejšia je reprodukcia Helmuta Gernsheima z roku 1952, v ktorej kontrasty tieňového heliografu zvýraznil akvarelmi. Táto ikonická verzia má dodnes vplyv na našu predstavu o pôvode fotografie.
Odkazoval som na ňu v rokoch 1995 a 1998 v Digitálnych partitúrach (Digital Scores), kde som Niépceovu fotografiu skonvertoval do alfanumerického kódu. Vytvoril som štyri takéto diela s rôznymi typografiami, pričom každé z nich pozostáva z ôsmich panelov s kompletným kódom. Udialo sa tak na počiatku digitálnej revolúcie vo fotografii.
Moje nové dielo Niépce Recoded (Prekódovaný Niépce) predstavuje ďalší prelom vo fotografii: jej konfrontáciu s umelou inteligenciou. Na základe Digitálnych partitúr – a teda nepriamo na základe pôvodnej Niépceovej fotografie – ju tak interpretuje model umelej inteligencie Midjourney. Strojom generované textové opisy sa následne použili ako pokyny (prompty) na nové interpretácie obrazov.
The archetype of photography, Nicéphore Niépce’s View from the Study of 1827, has undergone several transformations. The most significant is Helmut Gernsheim’s 1952 reproduction, in which he enhanced the contrasts of the shadowy heliograph with watercolours. To this day, our image of photography’s origins is shaped by this iconic version.
I referenced it in 1995 and 1998 with the Digital Scores, translating the Niépce image into an alphanumeric code. I created four such works with different typographies, each consisting of eight panels showing the complete code. This was at the dawn of the digital revolution in photography.
My new work, Niépce Recoded, marks another rupture in photography: its confrontation with artificial intelligence. Based on the Digital Scores – and thus indirectly on Niépce’s original image – it involves having an AI model, Midjourney, interpret them. The machine-generated text descriptions were then used as prompts for new image interpretations.
