Úspešný časopisový fotograf Michael Appelt sa po päťdesiatke vracia do svojej niekdajšej detskej izby, aby sa postaral o svoju matku, ktorá trpí demenciou. Appelt, traumatizovaný po dlhom pobyte v nemocnici a trpiaci ťažkými depresiami, sa láskyplne stará o svoju matku a popri tom sníva o minulých dobrodružstvách, keď jeho svet, ktorému dominovala fotografia, bol ešte nedotknutý.
Dokument Reinera Riedlera je osobným portrétom priateľa a spoločníka. Nielenže sa zaoberá základnými témami ľudskej existencie – starnutím a konfrontáciou s nevyhnutným –, ale sprístupňuje aj pozoruhodné fotografické dielo Michaela Appelta. Dobré roky sú však predovšetkým filmovým svedectvom o bezpodmienečnej láske, ktorá poskytuje matke a synovi základ pre spolužitie v časoch zmien.
To care for his mother, who is developing dementia, the successful magazine photographer Michael Appelt, in his early fifties, moves back into his old childhood bedroom. Traumatised after a long hospital stay and suffering from severe depression, Appelt lovingly looks after his mother while dreaming of past adventures, when his world, dominated by photography, was still intact.
Reiner Riedler’s documentary is a personal portrait of a friend and companion. It not only addresses essential themes of human existence – aging and the confrontation with the inevitable – but also makes accessible Michael Appelt’s remarkable photographic oeuvre. Above all, however, The Good Years is one thing: a cinematic testimony to unconditional love, which provides mother and son with the foundation for living together in times of change.
