THIS SIDE OF PARADISE
Rakúsky fotograf Reiner Riedler v cykle Táto strana raja mieri svoj objektív na kolektívne rituály strávenia voľného času, predstavenia a túžby, ktoré formujú súčasné Rakúsko. Od roku 2003 pozoruje miesta, kde sa zhromažďujú tisíce ľudí – hudobné festivaly, automobilové závody, lyžiarske preteky, kulturistické súťaže, erotické veľtrhy, krampusovské festivaly a karnevaly – priestory, kde sa dočasne rozpúšťajú spoločenské hierarchie, umožňujúce vznik nových foriem sebaprezentácie. Pre Riedlera tieto udalosti stelesňujú „emocionálnu masovú identitu“, kde sa stierajú hranice medzi realitou a inscenovaným zážitkom a kde sa sľub intimity skladá na verejnosti.
Séria nie je oslavou eventovej kultúry, ale sondou do jej rozporuplného charakteru. Riedler ukazuje napätie medzi extázou a prázdnotou, medzi komunitou a izoláciou, medzi inscenovaným a autentickým. Jeho fotografie odhaľujú krajinu túžob – ľudí hľadajúcich transcendenciu prostredníctvom rituálnej zábavy, obývajúcich krehký raj vytvorený zábavným a komunikačným priemyslom. V týchto prchavých okamihoch uvoľnenia je spoločenská štruktúra odhalená a zároveň zamaskovaná.

With This Side of Paradise, Austrian photographer Reiner Riedler turns his lens toward the collective rituals of leisure, spectacle, and desire that shape contemporary Austria. Since 2003, he has been observing the places where thousands gather – music festivals, car rallies, ski races, bodybuilding competitions, erotic fairs, Krampus festivals, and carnivals – spaces that temporarily dissolve social hierarchies and allow new forms of self-presentation to emerge. For Riedler, these events embody an “emotional mass identity,” where the boundaries between reality and staged experience blur and where the promise of intimacy is performed in public.
The series is not a celebration of event culture but a study of its ambivalence. Riedler shows the tension between ecstasy and emptiness, between community and isolation, between the staged and the authentic. His photographs reveal a landscape of longing – people searching for transcendence through ritualised entertainment, inhabiting a fragile paradise constructed by the entertainment and communications industries. In these fleeting moments of release, the social fabric is both exposed and disguised.
