The book Revue Fotografie, divided into three parts, is the first comprehensive review of this influential journal. It represents fundamental research in a field that has not yet been thoroughly explored, combining both fresh perspectives and an appropriate critical distance from the subject matter.

Volume I begins with a brief introduction to the evolution of photography magazines. The analysis of the journal is structured into two main sections for each decade. The first section provides a summary of behind-the-scenes activities, highlighting significant editors, authors, and photographers, as well as the magazine’s conceptual and technical framework. The second section evaluates each volume individually, including reprints from the original pages. The final part addresses the journal’s overall significance, incorporating personal insights from its readers, detailed comparisons with the Swiss magazine Camera, and a concluding discussion.

Volume II — an anthology — collects the most important texts from the periodical, written by celebrated photographers, theoreticians, historians, and, of course, the magazine’s editors. Short biographies of these contributors are also included, in some cases for the very first time.

Volume III documents the thirty-nine years of the magazine’s existence through spreadsheets, lists, and indices.
