Biography

Cig Harvey (1973) is a writer and photographer whose practice explores sensory experiences in an attempt to acknowledge and accentuate the ordinary and everyday. The work is rooted in the natural world, focusing on time and what it is to feel. She wants her readers to have the same experience with her work as she had when she made the images – a feeling in the body, a witness to something magical in a conflicted world. Her work is in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Portland Museum of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Farnsworth Art Museum, Houston Museum of Fine Arts and the Library of Congress, among others. She is the author of five monographs, including her most recent, Emerald Drifters, published in 2025 by Monacelli/Phaidon. Cig has exhibited and lectured at galleries, museums, and institutions worldwide, including the Farnsworth Art Museum, Fotografiska, NYC & Tallinn, and Stenersen Museum, Oslo. In 2023 she was the subject of the Oscar-qualified short film, Eat Flowers. Her writing and photographs have been published by The New Yorker, The Telegraph, The Sunday Times, The Virginia Quarterly Review, New York Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times.
Cig lives in Maine with her husband, Doug, and daughter Scout. The passing of time and the natural surroundings of her rural home have made her alert to the magic in the mundane.
