Biography

Ivo Danchev is a Bulgarian photographer and visual artist whose work explores the relationship between people, tradition, nature, and cultural memory. Since 2009, he has worked as a photographer and long-standing contributor to National Geographic Bulgaria, and from 2012 to 2017, he also served as the magazine’s art director.
Bulgarian masquerade traditions hold a special place in his work, which explores them through both documentary photography and artistic interpretation. Between 2021 and 2023, his photographic story about the Kukeri, Between Two Worlds: The Land of the Kukeri, was published in 17 editions of National Geographic around the world. In 2024, the series won first place in the Siena Creative Photo Awards. Exhibitions in several European countries followed, and in 2026, his work was also featured in the German edition of GEO magazine.
Danchev is the creator of the long-term photographic project KUKERLAND, in which real people, masks, and places come together to create a visual world on the boundary between documentary and mythology. The series Apparitions, presented here, forms part of this broader artistic project.
