Biography

Julia Fullerton-Batten is an internationally acclaimed fine-art photographer renowned for creating visually immersive worlds where photography, cinema, and storytelling converge. Her meticulously constructed images transform a single frame into an unfolding narrative – rich with atmosphere, emotion and psychological complexity.
Working on a monumental scale, Fullerton-Batten explores the human condition through carefully researched and intricately staged tableaux. Her photographs weave together history, memory, identity, and social observation, using unusual locations, handcrafted sets, street-cast models, and masterful lighting to create scenes that feel both familiar and dreamlike. Suspended between reality and imagination, her images invite viewers to look beyond the surface and discover stories that continue to evolve with every encounter.
Her distinctive visual language is rooted in a passion for storytelling and a fascination with the power of light, colour, and composition. Drawing inspiration from cinema, painting, and real-life experiences, she creates photographs that possess the emotional intensity of a film still while retaining the ambiguity and depth of fine art.
Fullerton-Batten’s work has been exhibited internationally in museums, galleries, and photography festivals across Europe, North and South America, and Asia, with solo exhibitions in London, Los Angeles, Milan, Mexico City, and Stockholm. Her photographs are held in the permanent collections of the National Portrait Gallery, London; the Musée de l'Elysée, Lausanne; the Parliamentary Art Collection, Houses of Parliament; and the Lishui Photography Culture Center, China.
A recipient of numerous international awards, Fullerton-Batten was named a Hasselblad Master in Fine Art and has twice been awarded International Photography Awards Fine Art Photographer of the Year. She is a Hasselblad Ambassador, the author of three monographs, and a respected speaker at leading photography festivals, museums, and universities worldwide. She also serves as a juror for many of the world’s most prestigious photography competitions.
