Biography

Karol Kállay (*1926, Čadca – †2012, Bratislava) was a prominent Slovak photographer, known for his reportage series from around the world, fashion photography, and numerous book publications. He began taking photographs at the age of ten and received his first award at sixteen. In 1948, he graduated from the University of Economics in Bratislava, but devoted his entire professional life to photography. From the mid-1950s onwards, he focused on fashion photography and, as a photographer for the magazine Móda, played a major role in shaping fashion photography in Czechoslovakia. He was among the first to photograph models outside the studio, in the streets and in natural settings. At the same time, he travelled extensively throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Australia, producing distinctive travel features that were published in prestigious international magazines such as GEO, Stern, Paris Match, and Der Spiegel. His photographs are characterised by their dynamism, spontaneity, and sensitive observation of everyday life. An important part of his work also consists of iconic images of old Bratislava. Kállay authored nearly 50 books, with Pieseň o Slovensku (Song of Slovakia) and Los Angeles receiving, among other distinctions, UNESCO awards. His numerous honours include the EFIAP title, the First Class Pribina Cross, and the Crystal Wing Award. His work represents one of the most significant chapters in 20th-century Slovak photography.
