LENA JAKUBČÁKOVÁ – GRANNY FROM THE WOODS (2ND EDITION)

The photographer Lena Jakubčáková devoted many years to patiently documenting the life of Katarína Kiovská, who was also known in the vicinity as the Granny from the Woods. The woman who, together with her mother, formed the last obstacle to completion of the magnificent socialist Ružín reservoir project in the 1960s, for long years lived in a secluded place near the water. For many, she was an elusive creature but for Lena Jakubčáková, she was a friend and a source of boundless fascination. The unique photographic project Granny from the Woods combines an intimate time- lapse documentary with meticulous archival research. As a result, a picture of the fragile life of one extraordinarily strong woman unveils in front of us. The book Granny from the Woods is about human strength. About how one person may withstand various trials and show resistance in an unequal battle. And it is also about how praying in sweatpants in the middle of a garden is sometimes more heartfelt than in magnificent cathedrals.
