SCENARIOS FOR PEACE

© Sissa Micheli

Landscapes are never just landscapes. They carry traces of history, memory, and human action – even where these are no longer visible. Sometimes, beneath untouched beauty lie histories of violence, political conflict, and war. It is within this tension that Sissa Micheli’s Scenarios for Peace take shape. The exhibition builds on her series Mountain Pieces – Reflecting History, in which Micheli explores Alpine landscapes and the histories inscribed within them. Places now associated with nature, freedom, and recreation were once sites of military strategies, shifting borders, and violent confrontation. Micheli’s approach extends beyond documentary observation. She repeatedly enters the image herself, transforming the photographic act into a performative gesture. Her body becomes a temporary presence within the landscape, connecting past and present. With Scenarios for Peace, the perspective also turns towards the future. Peace is presented not as a given, but as a possibility that must continually be imagined, negotiated, and redefined. Photography and video become means of both remembering and imagining. Conceived for the Month of Photography Bratislava, the exhibition ultimately asks: Can sites of war become spaces of remembrance – and can new scenarios for peace emerge from that memory? The exhibition presents both photographic and video works. Dino Rekanović
